Building on the success of previous workshops, the Australian Government Department of Education and the European Commission collaborated again by holding the Third European Union-Australia workshop on research infrastructure. The venue for the workshop was the Academy’s Shine Dome and the Academy provided assistance by way of coordinating the logistics for the event.

More than 60 participants attended the two-day event on 5 and 6 November, which comprised plenary presentations and focused breakout sessions to discuss healthy ageing, clean energy and sustainable cities.

Participants travelled to Melbourne at the conclusion of the Canberra workshop to attend a further one-day meeting on the topic of big data. This was followed by technical site visits to the Australian Synchrotron, the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and the New Horizons Centre at Monash University.

This event was a precursor to the Second International Conference on Research Infrastructure (ICRI) which will be held in Athens, Greece in April 2014.
