A group of experts is asking members of the scientific community and the Australian public for ideas and suggestions to guide a strategic plan for sustainability science.

The Australian Academy of Science’s Future Earth Australia project aims to build a long-term plan for sustainability research in partnership with academia, government, non-government organisations and the private sector. The plan aims to enable Australia to facilitate, coordinate and promote research which tackles sustainability issues.

The Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Chemistry is asking the public to comment on a long-term plan for chemistry.

The committee and its decadal plan working group have released an exposure draft of the Decadal Plan for Chemistry 2016–2025: Chemistry—For a better life. The plan looks at the future of the discipline in schools, universities, industry, government and research.

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) warmly congratulates Professor Alan Finkel on his new appointment as Chief Scientist of Australia.

The Australian Academy of Science has announced the withdrawal of its direct investments in fossil fuel companies.

The announcement was made by the Academy's President Professor Andrew Holmes in a speech at the Greenhouse 2015 conference in Hobart yesterday.

In the speech, Professor Holmes also discusses why scientists need to be "truth tellers" and fight against "scientific fallacy" in the public debate.

The Australian Academy of Science will fund new research to help the survival of some of Australia’s endangered species, help prevent hospital readmissions in central Australia, and apply cutting-edge ecology and evolutionary biology to model climate change adaptation.

The Academy today announced $190,000 worth of funding for scientists, including to support international travel and scientific conferences.

Registrations are now open for the Academy's annual celebration of science, Science at the Shine Dome.

Science at the Shine Dome (24–26 May 2016) will feature more than 40 outstanding scientists from around Australia—and special international guests—in a fast-paced three day conference showcasing new knowledge from across the scientific spectrum. The festival will finish with Human PLUS, a one day symposium on how science and technology is changing what it means to be human.

The Academy's Historical Records of Australian Science journal has released its December volume.

First published in 1966, Historical Records of Australian Science publishes peer-reviewed articles and book reviews on the history of science in Australia and the southwest Pacific and biographical memoirs of deceased Fellows of the Academy.

The latest volume includes articles on the history of science centres and museums in Australia and a memoir of the late immunologist, Gordon Ada.

Scientists who are leading the world on solar energy efficiency, helping to develop one-shot flu vaccines, and making portable biosensors to detect viruses are among the winners of the Australian Academy of Science’s annual honorific awards.

Each year the Academy presents awards to recognise scientific excellence, to researchers in the early stage of their careers through to those who have made life-long achievements.

Leadership by the Australian Government and global cooperation at the Paris climate talks will be essential in avoiding the worst effects of global climate change, according to the Australian Academy of Science.

Representatives from more than 190 countries are heading to Paris this week in an attempt to reach an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit human-induced global warming.

The Academy’s President Professor Andrew Holmes urged world governments to take note of the scientific evidence and the implications of inaction.
