The Academy’s 22 National Committees for Science are widely representative of scientific disciplines in Australia. The broad aims of the committees are to foster a designated branch or theme of natural science in Australia and to serve as links between Australian and overseas scientists in the same field. National Committees advise the Academy’s Council on Australia’s representation for the unions and multidisciplinary bodies of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and other international bodies.

The Academy’s Brain Box interview series continues with a new interview featuring Dr Peter Enticott – a neuroscientist who is working on novel treatments for autism.

Brain Box features short clips of scientists, particularly early- and mid- career researchers, speaking about their passions, motivations, heroes and experiences. It aims to show the general public that scientists come in all shapes and sizes.

The Future Earth Australia Brisbane consultation workshop on 11 November was held in partnership with the Queensland Office of the Chief Scientist, Griffith University and the Global Change Institute, UQ

In November 2015, the Academy announced its honorific awards recognising the early-career, mid-career and lifetime achievements of Australian scientists working in a diverse range of fields.

The Academy's Historical Records of Australian Science journal has released its December volume.

First published in 1966, Historical Records of Australian Science publishes peer-reviewed articles and book reviews on the history of science in Australia and the southwest Pacific and biographical memoirs of deceased Fellows of the Academy.

The latest volume includes articles on the history of science centres and museums in Australia and a memoir of the late immunologist, Gordon Ada.

The Academy sends warm congratulations to the following Fellows who celebrated their 90th birthdays this quarter:

Emeritus Professor Robert Bilger (1935–2015)

Emeritus Professor Bob Bilger

Emeritus Professor Robert William (Bob) Bilger FAA FTSE was one of the world’s leading contributors to combustion engineering modelling of turbulent reacting flows. His work also encompassed the broader area of fluid mechanics of reacting flows, pollutant formation and control, and air pollution.

The Australian Academy of Science is calling for research institutes to nominate high-achieving EMCRs to attend its annual meeting, Science at the Shine Dome, in May 2015. Science at the Shine Dome features professional development workshops for EMCRs as well as outstanding opportunities to meet and mingle with Australia’s most senior research scientists, and hear about some of the best research being done in Australia, across all disciplines.

The Academy, in collaboration with the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, is developing a bold new program for teaching mathematics in Australian schools.
