The Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering have appointed Dr Wafa El-Adhami to lead their Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Initiative.

Australia’s Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot today announced former Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick as Chair of its Expert Advisory Group, and the acceptance of eight new institutions into its Pilot of the UK-based Athena SWAN Charter.

The additional institutions bring the total number of participants to 40, with 30 universities (representing 75% of Australian universities), six medical research institutes and four publicly funded research agencies joining the Pilot.

The 40 organisations in Australia’s Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Pilot are meeting for the first time at a national symposium today in Sydney.

The SAGE Pilot of the UK-based Athena SWAN Charter is a partnership of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). It promotes equity and inclusion through an evaluation and accreditation framework to identify and address gender inequity in science and research organisations.

A gathering of some of Australia’s best and brightest minds will begin in Canberra tomorrow (21 July) as part of the Australian Academy of Science’s Think Tank on Risk - An interdisciplinary approach to living in a risky world.

ACT Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research, Meegan Fitzharris MLA, will open the event tonight, before two days of discussion and brainstorming commence tomorrow.

“Risk and uncertainty are a part of every aspect of our lives,” said Chair of the Think Tank, Professor Hugh Possingham.

60 of Australia’s best and brightest researchers descended upon the Shine Dome last week for the Theo Murphy Think Tank - An interdisciplinary approach to living in a risky world.

Risk and uncertainty are a part of everyone’s life, and the desire to avoid risk and reduce uncertainty is found in all human societies. However, we aren’t great at estimating and responding to risk and uncertainty – so how can we be better at it?

Each of the delegates involved were part of addressing one of four issues, all linked to risk, facing the world at large:

This speech was delivered by Dr David Caldicott, an Emergency Consultant at the Australian National University. He presented it to a group of early- and mid-career researchers as part of the 2016 Theo Muphy Think Tank—‘An interdisciplinary approach to living in a risky world’.

You are all at risk…

Mr President, distinguished guests and speakers, ladies & gentlemen—Welcome to Canberra!
