Professor Tamara Davis

An expert in astrophysics and cosmology, Professor Tamara Davis, is the subject of the Academy’s latest Brain Box podcast. Professor Davis, who also won this year’s Nancy Millis Medal for Women in Science, is trying to better understand the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

Since its creation by Royal Charter in 1954, gifts and legacies from Fellows and friends have helped the Academy to maintain a degree of financial independence. Many of our core activities such as scientific meetings, advice to support policy development, publications, science education, public awareness and outreach, and awards and fellowships would not be possible without this long-term support. It is critical to achieving our strategic objectives.

Strategic Plan 2015–2020

Four key themes based on building an Australian scientific culture of excellence will underpin and inform the Academy's work over the next five years, after the Academy's Council developed a Strategic Plan for 2015–2020.

These 1981 plans for work at the Academy reveal a proposed tunnel linking the Academy's Shine Dome to the (then) Beauchamp House. The reason for the proposed tunnel isn’t clear, but—as far as we know at least—it never got off the ground.
