Nobel Laureates WE Moerner and Brian Schmidt at the Shine Dome

The Academy hosted a visit from American Nobel Laureate, Professor WE Moerner, in February.

Professor Moerner received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. He joined Academy Fellows, including Nobel Laureate Brian Schmidt AC FAA FRS, as well as other Australian scientists, for lunch at the Academy.

Professor CNR Rao FRS has been formally admitted as a Corresponding Member of the Academy, signing the Academy’s Charter Book at a ceremony in December.

Professor Rao is one of the foremost world leaders in the area of solid state and materials chemistry. He played a leading role in establishing the Australia–India Strategic Research Fund, fostering a long-term scientific and technological partnership between the two countries. The fund is Australia’s single largest bilateral science and research fund.

Chengzhong (Michael) Yu, recipient of the 2015 Le Fèvre Memorial Prize.

The Academy’s 2015 Le Fèvre Memorial Prize for research in basic chemistry was recently presented to Professor Chengzhong (Michael) Yu from the University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.

The Academy sends warm congratulations to the following Fellows who celebrated their 90th birthdays this quarter:

Professor Ray Martin AO FAA FTSE—born 3 February 1926.

Professor Richard Stanton AO FAA—born 16 February 1926.

Cyrille Boyer, winner of the 2016 Le Fèvre Memorial Prize—one of the Academy's honorific awards for early-career researchers.

The Academy is calling for nominations for its prestigious honorific awards for early-career, mid-career and career researchers. The closing date for the 2017 award nominations is 30 April 2016.

The Academy has opened applications for research grants, travelling fellowships and research conference support for 2017–18. The closing date is 15 June 2016.

Close to $230,000 will be offered by the Academy in 2017 for scholarships and support for research in medical science; endangered Australian native vertebrate animals; history of science; population and environment; and marine, soil and plant biology.

An Elizabeth and Frederick White research conference has contributed to cross-disciplinary understandings of geomaterials.

The Conference on Mining Data for Detection and Prediction of Failure in Geomaterials, held at the University of Melbourne last year, brought together mathematicians and geologists to look into the key relationships between the structure, dynamics and functions of geomaterials.
